Chapter 9
Transforms
Draft: source-reviewed; native walkthrough not yet verified.
Start with the right selection #
Select the notes you want to change before opening a transform. Some actions can instead act on selected arranger clips or automation clips. The visible workspace and selection determine the target, so return to the piano roll when your intention is to edit notes.
Dialog controls preview a result. Apply accepts it and Cancel abandons it. Some dialogs use transient preview notes; others restore a captured state as you adjust parameters. Inspect the result before Apply and use Undo after an accepted edit if needed.
Advanced Transforms & Groove must be enabled for the corresponding controls. Some expert authoring, including per-chord controls, requires Pro. A hidden control or a rejected target is an availability condition, not an invitation to bypass the permission or ownership checks.
Shared core transforms #
Draft: this registry inventory has source review. Native controls and complete cross-surface behavior remain unverified.
The source-reviewed shared transform registry includes Set Velocity, Quantize, Legato, Humanize, Transpose, Perfect Harmony, Auto-Chord, Tonal Guidance and Convert to 12-TET. Availability, target support and invocation paths differ; the editor also has direct actions and dialogs outside this registry. This list does not establish that all nine are available through every tool or API request.
Set Velocity writes a value from 1 to 127, with 100 as the default. Quantize uses a positive grid duration to move note starts. Legato extends each onset group on a track to the following selected onset; simultaneous notes remain a group and the final group keeps its length.
Humanize uses a repeatable seed for timing, velocity and length variation. Transpose changes pitch. Perfect Harmony creates ratio relationships. Auto-Chord generates an extension from selected guide notes.
Target support belongs to each operation. Humanize, Perfect Harmony and Auto-Chord support freeform notes and clip-note instances through the shared core. Set Velocity, core Quantize, Legato and Transpose support freeform notes. Quantize and Legato reject notes inside note loops. Dedicated editor dialogs can have wider ownership support, so check the operation you actually opened.
Immediate toolbar actions #
Quantize snaps selected starts to the grid. Swing places selected notes on the swung grid using the stored swing amount and division. The global groove enable switch does not gate this action. If the stored amount is zero, Swing uses 50% swing. Legato fills selected-note gaps. Double Length and Halve Length change duration; Reverse mirrors timing. These commands act immediately rather than opening the parameter dialogs.
Global Groove has its own enable switch, swing amount from -100% to 100%, and rates 1/8, 1/16, 1/32 and 1/64. Changing the global groove is different from baking it with the Swing transform.
Join Notes, Merge Notes and the harmony actions have their own controls and selection rules. Arpeggio, Subdivide and Voicing Spread open dialogs.
Arpeggio #
Select a chord, open Arpeggio and choose Up, Down, Up-Dn, Dn-Up or Rnd. Rate ranges from 1/1 through 1/32, with 1/8 selected initially. Timing offers Normal, Dotted and Triplet. Gate % sets length from 10 to 100, initially 80.
Preview the pattern, then Apply. Right-click Arpeggio or use Per-chord when the Pro authoring control is available to set different values for different chord groups.
Strum #
Choose Up, Down, Alt or Rnd direction. Spread (beats) ranges from 0.01 to 2 and starts at 0.1. Ease and Vel Ramp range from -100 to 100; Humanize ranges from 0 to 100. They start at zero.
Shorten Notes starts off. Enable it when the strummed attacks should also shorten their notes. Strum supports per-chord settings through the advanced right-click route when available.
Humanize #
Timing Jitter ranges from 0 to 0.1 beats, initially 0.02. Velocity Jitter ranges from 0 to 30, initially 10. Length Jitter ranges from 0% to 20%, initially 5%. Preserve Rhythm starts off.
Clip Repeats offers Selected, and when the advanced repeat policies are available, Each Repeat and Same Source. Choose whether variation should target the selected instances or the shared source behavior. Randomize changes the seed. Keep the same seed while comparing amounts so the change is attributable to the controls.
Clip Repeats chooses which repeated clip material is targeted. This dialog does not expose note-grouping or correlated-sampling controls.
Generate #
Choose Harmonic, Euclidean or Stochastic mode. Harmonic uses Max Harmonic from 2 to 16, initially 8, and Vel Falloff from 0 to 100, initially 30. Note Length is Inherit, 1/4, 1/8 or 1/16.
Harmonic mode retains the source notes and adds harmonic overtones linked to each source at integer N:1 ratios. It selects the generated notes alongside their sources for further editing. This behavior is source-reviewed; audition and playback remain unverified.
Euclidean mode uses 4 to 32 Steps, 1 to 32 Pulses, Rotation, Step Size 1/4, 1/8 or 1/16, and Gate from 10 to 100. Initial values are 16 steps, 5 pulses, rotation 0, quarter-note step size and gate 80. Pulse count and rotation limits follow the step count.
Stochastic mode uses Probability from 0 to 100, initially 50, Steps from 4 to 64, initially 16, the same Step Size choices, Vel Min and Vel Max from 1 to 127, initially 60 and 100, and Gate from 10 to 100, initially 80. Randomize changes the generation choice.
Consolidate Notes #
Consolidate merges eligible nearby notes of the same pitch. Max Gap (beats) ranges from 0 to 4, initially 0.25. Distance measures End-Start or Start-Start, initially End-Start. Cross Masters starts off; Unlinked Notes starts on.
Clip, loop and generated notes are rejected by this dialog. It also reports when nothing can be merged or when relationships conflict. Read the result before assuming a selected phrase has been consolidated.
Subdivide #
Divisions ranges from 2 to 16, initially 2. Length % ranges from 1 to 100, initially 100. Skew ranges from 0 to 100, initially 50. Velocity Decay ranges from 0 to 1, initially 0.
A Skew of 50 gives equal divisions. Lower values make the early divisions longer; higher values make the later divisions longer. Adjust Length % to leave gaps, then use Velocity Decay for a fading roll.
Voicing Spread #
Spread ranges from 1 to 24, initially 4. Octave Range ranges from 1 to 8, initially 2. Octave Transpose ranges from -4 to 4, initially 0. Allow Extra Notes starts on.
Preview the voicing before Apply. The advanced right-click route can open per-chord settings when Pro authoring is active.
Flam #
Offset ranges from 0.005 to 0.5 beats, initially 0.0625. Roll Count ranges from 1 to 8, initially 1. Grace Velocity ranges from 0.05 to 1, initially 0.6. Use a short offset for a close grace attack or increase Roll Count for a repeated lead-in.
Ghost Notes #
Grid ranges from 0.0625 to 1 beat, initially 0.25. Velocity Scale ranges from 0.05 to 1, initially 0.35. Mode places ghosts Before, After or Both; Both is the initial choice. Preview how the extra notes meet neighboring attacks.
Groove #
Feel offers Swing, Laid Back and Push. Strength ranges from 0 to 1 and starts at 1. This dialog applies a named feel to the selection. It is separate from the global groove settings and the immediate Swing bake action.
Riff Machine #
Density ranges from 0.1 to 1, initially 0.6. Length ranges from 1 to 16 beats, initially 4. Randomize asks for another generated riff. Review the phrase before Apply.
Articulation Humanizer #
Choose an Instrument preset to apply the corresponding instrument-aware articulation variation. Randomize changes the result. Audition with the intended instrument; a preset name does not identify an installed sound or prove a particular instrument will respond to every articulation.
Euclidean #
Steps ranges from 1 to 32, initially 8. Pulses ranges from 1 to 32, initially 5. Rotation ranges from 0 to 31, initially 0. Use Steps for the cycle size, Pulses for its attacks, and Rotation to move the pattern around the cycle.
Advanced Quantize #
Division offers 1/4, 1/8, 1/12 or Custom. Custom Ratio numerator and Ratio denominator range from 1 to 64. Phase ranges from -100% to 100%. Direction selects Nearest, Earlier or Later, and Strength ranges from 0% to 100%.
Edges selects Starts, Ends or Both. Grid source selects Straight or Current groove. Collisions selects Allow overlap, Clamp to next or Preserve order. Minimum length 1/ uses a denominator from 1 to 3840, initially 960.
Initial values use 1/4, phase 0, Nearest, strength 100%, Starts, Straight and Allow overlap. Review the diagnostics and preview before Apply. If the meter or groove changes during the dialog, reopen it to capture the current grid.
Logical Transform Editor #
Choose Selection or All freeform as Scope. Match property offers MIDI, Velocity, Length, Start, Track and Muted. Choose =, ≠, <, ≤, > or ≥ and enter Match value. All freeform can be opened without selected notes.
Choose Transpose st, Transpose ¢, Time offset, Length ×, Set velocity or Mute, set Action amount, then Add action. Move up and Move down reorder the selected action; Remove last removes the final action. Sequential applies actions in sequence, while Snapshot uses the document snapshot semantics.
Review the summary and preview, then Apply. Save preset and Load preset retain reusable documents. Export Lua writes a script translation; Add as Operator writes the operator graph translation. A successful export does not run the script or guarantee that every unsupported target is editable.
Logical Transform Editor Apply accepts freeform-note targets and saves one Undo state before applying its prepared edits; clip-target edits are rejected.
