Chapter 8
Harmony and tuning
Draft: source-reviewed; native walkthrough not yet verified.
Create and inspect harmonic links #
Enable Harmonic Tuning in the Store, then leave Disable harmonic link authoring off in Settings > Harmony. Choose a master note and use the link gesture or Link to Hovered to connect another note. A link states an exact ratio to its master.
Shift-drag from a note enters link drawing. Ctrl+Shift requests the direct link mode. Inspect the resulting relationship before adding more parents. Forward (stable masters) is the normal graph mode; Whole graph (legacy, advanced) changes graph resolution and can reject incompatible links.
When you drag a single selected linked note, the snap planner checks its incoming masters together. In Interval Ratios mode it uses the active intervals; when Sub-intervals below is enabled, below-master candidates use Custom sub-intervals if enabled, or inverted active intervals otherwise. With Interval Ratios off, candidates come from the Harmonics count. If no exact pitch fits all masters and the active candidates, the note keeps its current pitch. Timing can still move independently.
Disable harmonic link authoring prevents new links and link changes. Existing links remain tuned. Hiding link lines or beams only changes the display.
If a graph conflict is reported, review the conflicting relationships. Clear Excluded Links removes excluded authored relationships; it is not a command to repair every tuning conflict automatically.
Edit ratios and stacked intervals #
With Harmonic beams enabled in Graphics, choose Pointer and Alt-drag a visible ratio field to adjust it. Focused fields also support typed edits; Enter commits and Escape cancels. Stacked relationships can show a compact label or an expanded label with their generator and repeat count. Changing the generator or count changes the actual relationship, so listen again after committing.
With line-style links, Alt-click a ratio pill to activate a half. Move between numerator and denominator with the configured left/right actions, then change the active value with the configured up/down actions.
Stacked notation uses positive integer ratios and a bounded signed repeat count. Repeat counts are limited to 64 in either direction, and a ratio component cannot exceed 2,147,483,647. Invalid or oversized input is rejected. These controls edit the relationship; the label is not merely a decorative annotation.
Show octave in harmonic beam labels controls whether octave information is visible. The compact presentation and the expanded editing presentation refer to the same saved relationship. Reopening a project and editing each presentation still need native walkthrough verification for this draft.
Tuning presets, ratio sources and EDO grids #
Open Settings > Harmony and choose a ratio source. Harmonic Tuning must be active and Disable harmonic link authoring must be off for the harmony controls to appear there. Click Tuning Settings in the piano-roll bottom bar to open the Tuning row for quick access to the ratio source, preset and EDO choices. The Tuning Settings popover has a ratio-source selector. The separate toolbar ratio-source button cycles through the four modes.
Choose Preset intervals to use a saved ratio set. The tuning list contains 26 factory presets and your saved user presets. Factory choices include Pythagorean, 5-limit JI, selected higher-limit JI, harmonic-series segments and historical or experimental ratio sets. The 12-TET Lowest Tenney JI presets are ratio sets approximating semitone positions; selecting one does not select a 12-TET grid.
Select a factory or user entry to load its intervals. This replaces the custom interval set, restores any stored custom sub-intervals and requests resnapping for selected linked notes. Inspect and audition the selection after loading. A preset without stored sub-intervals turns Custom sub-intervals off.
In Preset intervals mode, type a positive ratio such as 5:4 into the interval field and press Enter to add it. Clear All removes the custom interval set, so interval matching falls back to the fixed 13-entry default JI set, including unison and octave. Enable Sub-intervals below and Custom sub-intervals to enter a separate below-master ratio set.
To keep an edited interval set, click Save in the Settings tuning browser, enter a name and confirm Save. User tunings use .arbit-tuning XML files containing intervals and any custom sub-intervals. The saved entry appears below the factory entries in the browser and is also selectable from the Tuning row.
This Save stores the custom ratio sets, not the EDO grid or generated-ratio settings. Choose a factory preset or add intervals before saving; an empty custom interval set does not save the fallback defaults. Del deletes the selected user preset after confirmation and is unavailable for factory presets. Check that a saved entry appears and loads the intended ratios.
Lowest Tenney count generates octave-folded ratios in order of integer-ratio complexity. Set Count from 1 to 128 and Min from 0 to 200 cents to keep candidates apart. A larger minimum spacing can produce fewer ratios than the requested count. Harmonic window also accepts Count from 1 to 128. Set Start from harmonic 1 to 4096, then choose Otonal, Utonal or Both to generate the window ratios. Harmonic series count uses the harmonic count rather than a saved interval preset. Project saves and Harmony settings presets include the generated-ratio configuration. Generated-ratio save and restore still need native walkthrough verification for this draft.
For equal divisions of the octave, use the EDO selector in the Tuning row. Its choices are 5, 7, 12, 17, 19, 22, 24, 31, 41, 53 and 72 divisions. The 12-division choice is labelled 12-TET. Choose Custom..., enter a whole number from 2 to 72 and confirm OK for another grid. The grid is anchored at A4 = 440 Hz.
Changing EDO keeps existing notes at their exact frequencies. Unlinked notes use the new nominal grid when created or moved; linked notes retain their exact master-ratio relationship. EDO and Disable harmonic link authoring are separate settings. Choosing 12-TET in the grid selector does not disable link authoring, and disabling authoring leaves existing links tuned.
Factory and user-preset selection, save, deletion and reopening still need native walkthrough verification for this draft.
Tonal Guidance interpretations #
Draft: source-reviewed controls. Structural reference adoption and exact modal-role labels describe development behavior that still needs an installed app walkthrough.
Open Tonal guidance from the Piano Roll Harmony toolbar. Enable Show guidance layer, then drag in the thin header to create a tonal zone. Use Selected zone to choose the zone you want to inspect. Show note degrees displays the interpretation of its notes.
Target tuning, target tonic and target mode define the viewing target and transfer destination. Source tuning, source tonic and source mode describe the material you are transferring. Choosing these interpretations changes labels and recommendations; Fit or Transfer previews the pitch changes separately.
When an unambiguous exact reference is available, Adopt target and Use as source can remember the witnessed note occurrence used for that interpretation. This structural reference is separate from the fixed tonic frequency in Hz. Target and Source keep independent references. Save, reload and Undo preserve the chosen reference.
Pressing L changes the harmonic graph master and retunes its intervals. It does not replace an explicitly chosen target mode. An adopted reference follows the same note occurrence and reads its current intervals. Drift from the fixed tonic remains visible. A deleted or unresolved reference gives an unknown interpretation. Older frequency-only zones require explicit supported adoption; guidance does not silently bind them to another note.
Project, 12-TET and Dynamic JI are distinct tuning choices. Dynamic JI authoring depends on the existing Harmonic Tuning availability and authoring settings. Selecting 12-TET here is separate from choosing an EDO grid in the Tuning row.
With Show note degrees enabled, guidance uses the note's interior label. Exact authored relationships can establish a 5-limit modal degree under a physical or adopted reference independently of the preferred tuning catalog. A comma-shifted fifth can remain degree 5 and contribute to recommendations and Transfer. Its performed tuning fit and residual stay separate from that role. Hover or open Details to inspect the exact ratio, comma displacement, fixed-target residual and any ambiguity or path conflict. A supported degree does not establish a unique heard mode, exact tuning or a settled sound. Fit or Transfer remains a separate pitch-edit preview. A label can be absent when guidance is hidden or disabled, analysis is staged or stale, Auto-Chord preview is active, or another note display takes precedence.
Preview Fit and Transfer #
Draft: source-reviewed controls; native walkthrough not yet verified.
Choose a tonal zone and its target interpretation. Fit notes to mode previews compatible pitches in that target. For Transfer to another mode, choose a separate source interpretation first. Transfer reads the source degrees and maps them to the target tonic and mode. Notes belong to the zone where they start.
Use Original and Proposed to compare the captured preview. Apply commits the accepted changes in one undo step; Cancel preview clears the proposal. If the notes or guidance change, preview again before applying. When Transfer previews a supported change to the existing Target reference interval, Apply and Undo keep that interval and the transferred notes consistent while retaining the same reference note, target tonic and mode, and independent Source.
A preview with no proposed pitch changes is not proof that every note fits the target mode. Matching source and target interpretations can produce no edits while outside or unproven note roles remain. Check the note-role details rather than treating an unchanged Transfer as a fit check.
Transfer maps uniquely established modal degrees through their degree relationships and preserves the exact authored comma displacement and register. It retains notes with conflicting realizations, higher-prime or unproven roles that do not support a mapping, and reports warnings. A nearby performed-tuning degree does not establish an interval role. Review the retained-note explanation and the separate tuning residual in the preview evidence.
Outside notes offers Preserve alterations or Snap to destination degrees. Preserve alterations carries an alteration through Transfer; it does not always keep the original pitch when the target changes. Snap does not infer a missing linked source role. If preview reports a linked endpoint outside the zone, extend the zone to include the complete linked material. If retained harmonic links conflict with the proposed tempered pitches, inspect those constraints and use Convert to 12-TET from Chords & Harmony where appropriate. Select notes or a harmonic relationship to expose the action. You can pin it to the toolbar or use its configurable shortcut. Conversion opens a separate Original/Proposed preview before Apply.
Convert selected material to 12-TET #
Draft: source-reviewed controls; native walkthrough not yet verified.
Select notes or a relationship, then choose Harmony > Convert to 12-TET from the Piano Roll context menu. Close the Tonal Guidance inspector before opening this conversion preview.
The preview compares captured original pitches with proposed semitone-grid pitches and identifies relationships to remove. Compare Original and Proposed, and review ambiguous mappings and removed links before Apply. Removed ratio relationships no longer constrain the converted material.
Apply commits the accepted proposal in one undo step. Cancel leaves the proposal unapplied. If the project changes, use Refresh preview before applying. Unsupported note occurrences produce a diagnostic; select their supported source or detach them before conversion.
Use the floating Lattice #
Enable Harmonic Tuning and leave Disable harmonic link authoring off in Settings > Harmony, then click the Lattice toolbar button in the piano roll. The floating Lattice requires Pro Advanced Lattice. It maps the song's notes and harmonic links while leaving the piano roll available for editing.
When an EDO is active in the Piano Roll, the floating Lattice displays that EDO as an isomorphic grid. Choose the EDO in the Piano Roll Tuning row; the Lattice has no separate EDO selector.
Click a node to select and audition its note at the resolved tuning. Shift-click or Command-click adds it to the selection. To create a harmonic link, drag the master node onto the slave node. The notes must be distinct, harmonic link authoring must be enabled, and the new relationship must not create a cycle. Releasing on the starting node creates no link.
Drag empty background to pan and use the mouse wheel to zoom. With the Lattice focused, use these keys without modifiers. G switches between Tonnetz and golden-angle layouts. D toggles comma drift between differently tuned copies of a pitch class, P toggles the playback-order comma-pump overlay, and H toggles higher-prime sheets. F or Home fits the notes to the panel; C centers the root.
Drag the title bar to move the panel and its bottom-right corner to resize it. Click its close button or press Escape to hide it. Panel bounds are remembered in process memory; they are not a saved project layout. Reopening fits the notes to the panel again.
Opening the panel requests keyboard focus. Native key delivery, link dragging, audition and close/reopen behavior still need walkthrough verification for this draft.
When Harmonic Lattice is available, its toggle defaults to Shift+N. Check Settings > Keys for the current binding.
Common, Stacked and JI chords #
Open Chord Panel. Hover a chord to hear a preview, then click it to create notes. Common filters the list to common chord types. Stacked inserts a chain between consecutive chord tones instead of linking each tone from the root. Both options are saved as panel preferences.
With Chord Tools active and Chord Panel open, select notes to populate Chord Suggestions when eligible matches are available. Hover a suggestion to preview it, then click to apply it. While the green chord cursor is active, selecting a note moves the cursor to its start. A single click on empty piano-roll space moves the cursor and keeps the selection; double-click empty space to deselect. Complete and JI Complete use the green cursor, or the active time selection when one is present.
For a tuned progression, open Add > JI Chord Helper or its pinned toolbar button. Click empty piano-roll space to set the green insertion line, then click a chord. Successful insertion advances the cursor for the next chord.
The JI Chord Helper generates exact harmonic candidates. Use Quality, Limit or Voices to group results. Prime and Odd limit choices constrain the candidate ratios. Voice count, reach, Tenney ceiling, span and tolerance narrow the search.
Exact register requires the selected notes at their displayed register; turning it off permits octave-equivalent matching. Gen tune can snap the selection to the generated tuning on insertion. V-lead sorts by voice-leading distance. Pin 1/1 fixes the root as the chord root. The tonality filter selects All, Otonal or Utonal.
Harmony ranking offers Tenney complexity, Spectral roughness and Balanced. New controls start with Balanced. Tenney limits still restrict ratios. Spectral roughness assumes a harmonic sound, so compare candidates using the instrument you intend to play.
In the JI Chord Helper, Generated shows candidates from the current generation controls. List presents those candidates as rows; Map presents them on a lattice. Map requires Pro Advanced Lattice. These helper views are separate from the floating Lattice toolbar panel.
With Pro Advanced Lattice, click Shapes to explore curated ratio sets. Repeated clicks cycle through Hexany 1·3·5·7, Diamond 5 and Diamond 7. Click Songs to build candidates from exact linked ratios in the project. Repeated clicks switch between All and Selection; Selection limits the source notes to the current selection. Separate link chains retain their own reference roots.
The optional 3D preview also requires Pro Advanced Lattice, browser support and the lattice assets. It is unavailable during Dimensional Build. The helper's advanced views and their native interactions still need walkthrough verification for this draft.
Set Chord Panel options #
Common and Stacked are in the Chord Panel's top option row. Common filters both the library and suggestions. Stacked affects both insertion routes.
With a chord row hovered, Shift-scroll previews inversions. With a suggestion row hovered, Ctrl-scroll previews its inversions; plain scrolling moves the list.
Stacked is hidden when the panel supplies the drawing palette. These options are retained in project state.
Complete and tonal constraints #
Draft: source-reviewed behavior; native walkthrough not yet verified.
Complete uses the destination guidance and selected phrase intent when assessing chord candidates. Changing the display grouping does not turn those constraints off. A Strict destination with an unresolved target refuses candidates; an empty result can therefore mean no candidate meets the current constraints.
Continue preserves the existing ordering when tonal guidance is disabled or the destination is Free and no retained source material crosses a Strict zone. Sustained notes and retained source effects can encounter a later Strict zone, so moving the insertion point can change which candidates are allowed.
Wait for candidate assessment to finish before comparing the resulting list. The exact menu, preview, insertion and undo behavior still needs a native walkthrough for this draft.
Circle of Fifths #
With Chord Tools and Harmonic Tuning active and a non-12-TET tuning, open Circle of Fifths from the Piano Roll toolbar or its shortcut. Hover a segment to preview its chord. Click to create it at the chord cursor, or right-click to open its chord menu.
With the Circle open, 3-Ring Layout and Roman Numerals change the overlay display. Stacked Link Mode controls chain linking for chords created from the Circle; it does not change the layout. The Chord Panel's Stacked option is separate and affects that panel's insertions.
These Circle controls still need a native walkthrough for this draft.
Perfect Harmony #
Select the passage and use Perfect Harmony to create compatible ratio links with the default settings. The default action is available in Free with Harmonic Tuning active. To open the Pro expert dialog, right-click the pinned Perfect Harmony button or click its Settings button in Chords & Harmony when the expert control is available.
In the expert dialog, choose Harmony ranking. Tenney Max limits complexity from 2 to 14, Prime Limit ranges from 3 to 11, and Pitch Tolerance limits distance from written pitch from 0 to 50 cents. Attack Window groups close starts from 0 to 1 beat. Scan Distance ranges from 0 to 16 beats; zero keeps direct linking chord-local. The separate toolbar graph Tenney field controls graph-note snapping when Interval Ratios snapping is off. It does not set the default Perfect Harmony action; use Tenney Max in the expert dialog to configure that transform.
Parent Links allows 1 to 12 parents. Multi-Link Fit permits 0 to 36 cents of disagreement for additional parents. Temporal bridges connects neighboring zones, with Bridge Gap from 0 to 8 beats and Bridge Links from 0 to 4 per boundary. Common-tone locks links octave-equivalent repeated tones, with Common Reach from 0 to 16 beats.
Factory values use Balanced ranking, Tenney Max 9, Prime Limit 5, Pitch Tolerance 18 cents, Attack Window 0.125 beats, Scan Distance 0, Parent Links 8 and Multi-Link Fit 6 cents. Temporal bridges and Common-tone locks are on, with a 2-beat bridge gap, one bridge link and an 8-beat common reach.
Use Preview, inspect the link and rejection metrics, then Finalize to accept. Cancel abandons the preview. Factory restores the factory controls. The dialog reads the current automatic Perfect Harmony profile, so its starting values can differ from the factory values.
Root Path Tune #
Select at least two notes and use Root Path Tune to choose roots across the passage. Free uses the default action. With Pro, right-click the pinned Root Path Tune button or click its Settings button in Chords & Harmony to open the expert dialog. Pro also permits a saved profile for automatic tuning.
Chord Purity favors roots that explain each zone cleanly. Internal Voice preserves relationships inside a zone. Drift Guard penalizes retuning held, common and repeated notes. Common-Tone controls the penalty for shared tones, and Unison Lock keeps overlapping copies of a written pitch together. Each of these weights ranges from 0 to 2 and starts at 1.
Drift Reach looks back across 1 to 100 zones. Repeat Gap ranges from 0 to 2 beats and determines how long a rest can separate repeated tones that still resist retuning. Virtual Roots permits muted internal anchors when a real root cannot explain a chord. Onset Threshold groups starts from 0 to 0.25 beats.
The automatic factory profile uses Drift Reach 1, Repeat Gap 1 beat, Virtual Roots on and Onset Threshold 1/32 beat. Saved expert defaults or an existing customized automatic profile may change the dialog values.
Apply previews the tuning result, Finalize accepts it, and Cancel leaves the passage without accepting the preview. Save Default stores the dialog defaults; Factory restores them. Use for Auto stores the Pro controls for Auto Root Path Tune without creating links or anchors at that moment. The preview displays root zones in the piano roll and reports zone count and average span, chord fit and Tenney complexity, step drift, boundary energy and missing-root rates.
Tune edits automatically #
Settings > Harmony offers Auto Perfect Harmony and Auto Root Path Tune. Choose the mode that suits your editing task. These are automatic editing policies, so check the links or root anchors after changing notes.
Automatic tuning and explicit link authoring are separate choices. Turning off link authoring keeps existing tuning relationships; it does not remove them from the project.
Auto-Chord defaults and expert controls #
Select guide notes, enable Harmonic Tuning, then use Auto-Chord. Free generates chords with the factory settings. With Pro and Harmonic Tuning active, right-click the pinned Auto-Chord button or click its Settings button in Chords & Harmony to open the expert dialog. The default action can report that contradictory guide links or the current constraints leave no valid extension.
The factory preset generates two accompaniment voices per zone with Balanced ranking, Prime limit 5, Local Tenney 7.5, Sounding-pair Tenney 6.75, Transition Tenney 8.75 and Continuity 0.75. The register spans MIDI 36 to 84 with preferred pitch 55. The shortest zone is 0.75 beats, the preferred duration is 1 beat and the longest zone is 4 beats. Adventure starts at 0 and the factory action rebuilds the selected internal links.
In the expert dialog, choose a Purpose preset, then Generate chords or Add notes. Pitch placement is Any, Above selected harmony or Below selected harmony. Lowest pitch, Preferred pitch and Highest pitch use MIDI positions 0 to 127. Set a sensible register before auditioning.
Minimum generated voices and Maximum generated voices control the new voice count per zone. Generate chords uses 1 to 8 voices; Add notes can allow zero additions. Shortest zone starts at 0.125 beats and can reach 64; Longest zone can reach 128. Preferred duration ranges from 0.125 to 128 beats and sets the desired duration within the chosen span.
Harmony ranking and Prime limit constrain the result. Local Tenney, Sounding-pair Tenney and Transition Tenney each range from 2 to 14. Continuity and Adventure range from 0 to 1. Global harmony considers a broader sequence, and Rebuild selected links changes the link policy for chord generation.
Edit zones lets you draw or resize a zone, click inside to split, and double-click a shared boundary to merge. Double-click an exposed end to remove it. Shift moves without grid snapping. Clear zones and Automatic zones return to automatic segmentation. Locked or reference-only zones protect their accepted or original material.
Tonal controls can apply to Overall phrase or a particular zone. Follow recommendations, Pinned tonic and mode, and Free harmony set the policy. Fixed tonic and Fixed mode hold those choices. Treat a fitted scale degree as a tuning suggestion; it does not always prove an exact link to the tonic.
Tonic frequency fields show rounded Hz text while retaining the exact stored frequency. Leaving that text unchanged preserves the exact tonic when you change other controls. Editing the text replaces it with the frequency you enter, which must be positive and finite. Very small positive frequencies use scientific notation when ordinary rounding would show zero.
Consider loop transition starts off. Enable it to plan and audition the return to the opening chord in the next repetition, allowing tuning drift. This setting alone does not create a note loop.
Make loop on Apply is a separate control and starts off. It requires Consider loop transition; turning Consider loop transition off also clears Make loop on Apply. Refresh preview after changing either control. With Make loop on Apply enabled, Apply creates a note-loop rectangle with one extra repetition only when the exact return links and tuning can represent the solved preview. Those links connect the final chord to the opening chord of the next repetition. Leave Make loop on Apply off for the ordinary Apply workflow.
Make loop on Apply needs compatible freeform guide and generated notes on one track, fully contained in the phrase. It rejects clip notes or clip repeats, notes already in a note loop, pitch anchors, generated root anchors, vertical octave copies, notes extending outside the phrase, and selections across multiple tracks. Generated notes must use the guide notes' track. Read the diagnostic, then select compatible notes or leave Make loop on Apply off and refresh.
With Make loop on Apply enabled, Audition Phrase plays two complete passes, including selected notes in gaps between authored zones. Those gaps still receive no generated additions. With only Consider loop transition enabled, the preview auditions the planned return without creating a stored loop.
Use Seed for a repeatable generation choice, or Randomize for another. Refresh preview after changing controls. Auto refresh requests updates as controls change. Audition Phrase plays the prepared result. Apply accepts a current preview; Cancel discards it. Save Defaults stores the current mode, register, voice counts, Pro and tonal controls, seed and refresh preference.
If the project changes while planning, refresh and review the result again before applying. The editor rejects a stale result instead of silently applying it to changed notes.
Auto-Chord Studio has an independent Output tuning choice: Project, 12-TET or Dynamic JI. It controls generated notes even when Tonal guidance is off. In 12-TET, generated notes use semitone-grid pitches without new harmonic links; existing notes keep their authored tuning unless you explicitly transform them. The Studio retains its existing Pro requirement, and Dynamic JI retains the existing Harmonic Tuning capability requirement. This draft has not verified the native walkthrough.
Save Defaults also remembers Consider loop transition and Make loop on Apply. Both choices are off in a fresh default state. The Looping chords preset enables Consider loop transition and leaves Make loop on Apply off. Saved defaults can restore your earlier choices.
Import a tuning or exchange a project #
Use Load / Import > Scala Tuning for .scl and .kbm files. Opening a .scl uses its matching .kbm file when available. Opening a .kbm requires the matching .scl file. Import goes through project replacement, so respond to the save prompt before replacing current material.
The import menu also accepts DonutStudio projects, MIDI, JI files and DAWProject. Save / Export offers DonutStudio project, MIDI, JI, DAWProject and audio routes. Choose the destination format for the receiving application; do not expect a MIDI file to preserve every DonutStudio editing relationship.
Scala export uses the Detached export panel rather than the ordinary Save / Export format menu. Prepare and review its SCL, KBM and MIDI segments before writing them to a destination.
Export static tuning segments #
Open Settings > Detached export. Choose all score events, current selection, or a beat range with an explicit source-track list. Realized events represent playback; Authored events, not playback retains authored event form. The default range mode uses quarter-note beats, includes the start and excludes the end, and includes overlapping notes without trimming. An empty track field does not mean all tracks.
Choose Exclude muted events for native static export. The default Pitch expression policy rejects bends, vibrato and anchors. Base pitch only deliberately discards that expression. Retrigger at resolved anchors restarts sounding notes at anchor cuts and rejects continuous expression. Retrigger at bend points loses glides and release tails and rejects anchors, vibrato and pitch overrides.
Sample pitch wheel holds pitch between frozen samples with 14-bit rounding. Enter the destination pitch-bend range explicitly from 1 to 127 semitones and a positive sample interval in MIDI ticks. PPQ is 960. Unsupported audible pitch paths, off-grid boundaries and conflicting overlapping bends are rejected; channels retain their authored assignments and the wheel centers when idle.
Use Prepare frozen export, open every prepared file and segment, then Choose destination folder.... Enter a new bundle name and confirm that you reviewed every file and segment before Publish reviewed segments. The panel creates new directories and refuses existing destinations. Loading prepared JSON does not establish its musical fidelity.
Native preparation uses zero-cent pitch merging and a maximum 0.001-cent deviation. The preparation limits include four simultaneously sounding parts and 128 keys per part or segment. Load each segment's SCL and KBM together in the destination instrument. Static tuning cannot promise continuous expression or correct synthesizer release tails across tuning changes.
Segments publish independently. Cancellation can leave completed segments already written, and remaining segments may be unattempted after an error. Inspect the panel result and output directories. Cross-platform native walkthroughs and receiver round trips are not yet verified for this draft.
MPE and MTS-ESP #
In Settings > MIDI, choose the tuning output mode and pitch-bend range for the receiver. MPE Mode uses channels 2 to 16 with pitch bend. Match the receiving instrument configuration and range, then test a small chord before a full performance.
MTS-ESP Master publishes the current tuned notes to compatible plug-ins when that service is available. MTS-ESP native synth playback reads an external master for SF2/SFZ, OP-7, Sybil-16 and Punch-5. If no external master is present, those instruments use score tuning.
Accepted held native-synth notes can retune continuously. Keys that the master leaves unmapped are skipped at onset and require a later onset to sound. Instrument Grid, samples, vocals, MIDI output and exports retain score tuning.
MTS-ESP depends on compatible software and the runtime host. Enabling a switch is not proof that another instrument received a tuning. This draft has not verified every standalone, plug-in and platform combination.
MTS-ESP native synth playback defaults to off. Its on/off choice is saved with the project.
Harmony settings presets #
In Settings > Harmony, choose Factory or User and select an entry to apply a settings preset. To save the current configuration, choose User, select Save, enter a name, and select Save. Confirm that the new entry appears in the User list. Delete removes the selected user preset after confirmation.
Harmony settings presets store configuration, including tuning, track instruments, effects and instrument patches. They preserve existing notes, links and clips. Save the project separately to preserve musical content. These settings presets are separate from the interval sets in Tuning.
