Chapter 10

Recording

Choose a recording destination #

Open the track menu and choose Record MIDI, Record Audio, or Record Per-Note Audio. Record MIDI creates editable notes from MIDI input. Record Audio creates an arranger audio clip. Record Per-Note Audio analyzes a recorded take into pitched sample notes and requires the Per-Note Audio add-on to be enabled.

These recording modes belong to individual tracks. A new track starts without a recording setup and is not armed. Group tracks are not recording destinations. Duplicating a track copies its setup but leaves the duplicate disarmed.

Select the input and arm the track #

Choose an available source in the track recording controls. MIDI recording uses the logical Host MIDI Input available to DonutStudio. In a plug-in host, route the intended MIDI device in the host. For audio, select the input device and channel source you actually connected. The Audio Record Controls also have an Input device selector.

Choose Arm in the track Recording menu. If a saved source is marked Unavailable, select a currently available source before recording. A remembered source name does not mean that the hardware is connected.

Draft: Enable Monitoring changes a saved recording setting, and monitoring starts off for a new setup. Audible input routing and its offline behavior remain unverified. Confirm that you can hear the selected input before relying on this control for a take. Start at a low listening level and use headphones when recording a microphone to avoid feeding speaker output back into the input.

Record with the Record Deck #

Use the Record Deck to record the armed tracks in one session. The Only while playing control starts enabled. With that option on, recording follows transport playback. The count-in choices are No count-in, 1 bar, and 2 bars.

Press play after arming when the controls say Audio: arm then press play. Stop the session with the Record Deck control and wait for audio finalization before checking the new clip or notes. The status text reports creation failures and unavailable inputs.

Quantize controls recorded note timing. Overdub adds to existing material, while Record New Take changes the track recording choice. A new per-track recording setup has quantize and overdub enabled. Check the controls before a take rather than relying on an earlier session.

Audio destination controls #

The Audio Record Controls offer To Clip and To Notes destinations. To Clip keeps the take as an audio clip. To Notes analyzes it for pitched vocal notes. To Note records directly into exactly one selected note. Select that note before enabling To Note.

If pitched analysis finds no notes, the recording creates a clip instead. If the required add-on is unavailable, the take also falls back to a clip. Inspect the status and arranger before repeating the recording. A clip fallback is a usable take, not proof that note analysis succeeded.

Recording in a host #

The standalone application owns its audio-device selection. When DonutStudio runs inside a DAW, the host supplies audio and MIDI input and transport. Configure and enable those inputs in the host, then check the sources DonutStudio offers. Do not expect the standalone device picker to replace the DAW routing.
